Within the pages of this handbook is everything the gardener needs to know about how to get the best from these most wonderful and gracious of garden plants. Includes 120 illustrated photographs taken by the author.

Dave Root the owner of Kelways has brought this book back into print after nearly 60 years. The text is largely as written by James Kelway and an updated section on pest and disease prevention and control has been included. Some of the varieties listed in the original book are not readily available any more, or have long since been lost to cultivation. These have been omitted and other varieties added that were also familiar to and grown by James Kelway.

These have been described where possible using his own words from Kelways nursery records. Other, more recent introductions have been added to bring this book up to date with some of the incredible advances in breeding and superb new cultivars that have been introduced in the last 60 years, which have substantially increased the colour range and flowering period of the peony.

The chapter on tree peonies has been rewritten to include in particular, the latest intersectional hybrids: crosses between herbaceous and tree peonies, which were unimaginable at the time this book was originally written.
